Higher DHA Status in Maternal Cord Blood and Improved Measures of Infant Development
ثبت نشده
چکیده
The present study assessed the relationship of DHA omega-3 levels in the cord blood plasma (phospholipid biomarker) and various measures of infant development in 109 Inuit infants in Arctic Quebec. The blood samples were taken from the umbilical cord after it was severed. The results indicated that higher DHA concentrations in cord blood samples were associated with longer gestation, better visual acuity, better novelty preference on the Fagan test at 6 months, and better Bayley Scale mental and psychomotor performance at 11 months. The authors conclude that their findings are ‘consistent with the need for substantial increases in this critically important fatty acid during the third semester spurt of synaptogenesis in brain and photoreceptor development’.

Maternal docosahexaenoic acid supplementation during pregnancy and visual evoked potential development in term infants: a double blind, prospective, randomised trial.
AIM To test the hypothesis that maternal docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) supplementation during pregnancy enhances maturation of the visual evoked potential (VEP) in healthy term infants. METHODS One hundred women were supplemented with either fish oil capsules rich in DHA (n = 50) or placebo capsules (n = 50) from week 15 of pregnancy until delivery. Total fatty acids in red blood cells and plasm...

AIM To establish the levels of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (AA) in both plasma and erythrocytes of maternal and cord blood as well as in breast milk of mothers delivering babies at term. METHODS A total of 148 mothers delivering babies at term were recruited from Bharati Medical Hospital, Pune, India. RESULTS Levels of DHA and AA in both plasma and erythrocyte were highe...
متن کاملPlasma or red blood cell phospholipids can be used to assess docosahexaenoic acid status in women during pregnancy.
The suitability of using plasma phopholipids (PLs) to assess docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) status during pregnancy is well accepted. Recent discussions have centered around whether red blood cells (RBCs) can be used to indicate DHA status. We tested the hypothesis that in pregnant women participating in an intervention study when fed a functional food containing DHA, maternal plasma PL DHA would b...
متن کاملEssential fatty acid composition of plasma phospholipids and birth weight: a study in term neonates.
BACKGROUND Essential fatty acids (EFAs) in umbilical cord blood samples are associated with attained birth weight in premature infants and low-birth-weight neonates. OBJECTIVE The objective was to investigate relations between the EFA composition of cord and maternal plasma phospholipids and birth weight in term neonates. DESIGN This was a cross-sectional study in 627 singletons born at ter...
